The Richmond Food Cooperative is currently half-way to its goal of recruiting the 1,000 members needed to capitalize and open the store.
The Co-op will be a member-owned full service grocery store providing affordable, local, sustain-able, and healthy food options. As a one-stop shop, it will serve all of one’s household needs throughout the year. Scott’s Addition is the selected neighbor-hood for the store, and the timeline for opening is dependent on raising member equity. The more quickly people join, the sooner the Co-op will open.
Co-op ownership means shopping with shared val-
ues: supporting local farms and businesses while growing healthy communities. Co-ops – and their money – are owned and controlled by their member/owners, therefore members provide the basic capital to start the Co-op.
Member equity is a one-time investment of $125 per adult in a household, and there is $25 joining fee (per household). Income-qualified members are eligible for reduced pricing: $5 joining fee + $10 member equity. Several installment payment options are also available. The Co-op’s start-up budget also includes funds from an upcoming member loan campaign, as well as traditional lending sources.
